Miss Sudan Beauty Pageant is the creation of Yar Kang. She grew up in The Republic of the Sudan - a region that has been torn by civil war for over fifteen years. The war claimed her father and brother, and caused her to lose track of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Yar's dream had been to pursue a professional modeling career, but she struggled to find work in Sudan. At eighteen, she competed in the Miss Africa pageant and finished in the top five. A few years later, Yar was working in Cairo as a babysitter and modeling on the side.

Soon, Yar learned that her mother was living in Sioux Falls, and so she made the trip to the United States. She has since been speaking at schools and colleges, attending rallies and working for non-profit groups in order to raise American's awareness of southern Sudan and women's rights.
